They wanted the band to disappear so the stone would sit as if it were floating. We took the shank down to 1.6mm and hid the bearing under a floral head — the flower is only visible from underneath, which is exactly where they wanted it.

6- Solitaire189A single stone, alone. Nothing competes with it, and nothing hides a mediocre one.
- Three-stone25A centre stone flanked by two. Often read as past, present and future, though the practical effect is width across the finger.
- Halo13A ring of small stones encircling the centre, making it read appreciably larger and adding brightness at the edge.
- Toi et moi11Two stones side by side — "you and me". Usually contrasting shapes or colours, deliberately asymmetric.
- Cluster11Several stones grouped to read as one form. Historically how smaller stones were made to carry a ring.
- Bezel11A metal rim wrapped fully or partly around the stone. The most protective setting there is, and the flattest against the hand.
